Dr. Sunjya K. Schweig, MD - Integrative Family Medicine

Sunjya K. Schweig, M.D., is a Bay Area native. He was born in Point Reyes, where he spent his childhood (with the exception of six years in India). Dr. Schweig completed his undergraduate work at U.C. Berkeley in medical anthropology and religious studies. After graduating, he spent a year in Ecuador researching and doing field work with both western physicians and indigenous healers.

Dr. Schweig attended medical school at U.C. Irvine where he was a leader in alternative medicine education and research. Dr. Schweig graduated with honors and then completed his family medicine residency at the UCSF Santa Rosa Family Practice Residency Program. He subsequently helped found the residency’s Integrative Medicine fellowship and consultation clinic, and is currently a member of the UCSF faculty as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Dr. Schweig has particular expertise in complex chronic illnesses which require rigorous investigation and management. Currently, his medical practice is focused on identifying and treating complex infections such as Lyme disease and coinfections as well as PANS/PANDAS/PITAND (strep, viral, Lyme, or other triggers that can cause acute neuropsychiatric illness in children and adolescents). Dr. Schweig is an expert in diagnosis and treatment of these deeply nuanced conditions and has helped many individuals and families regain health. Dr. Schweig and his team have found that the integrative medical approach is essential in treating these types of complex conditions.

Additional areas of expertise include: Integrating complementary and alternative medical care with conventional medicine; celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and other gastrointestinal issues; alternative approaches to allergy; functional medicine; holistic pediatrics; nutrition and healthy weight loss; and osteoporosis. Dr. Schweig also treats people with stress, anxiety, insomnia, and depression, using both the HeartMath® biofeedback system and amino acid therapy (for neurotransmitter and hormonal balancing).
